Our Story

I'm Melissa and I'm the creator, designer and founder of Buck Stone Country Clothing. Buck Stone is a slow fashion country outdoors clothing company with designs inspired by my historical spa town, Buxton in the glorious Peak District.  It's a family-owned business with a passion for the great outdoors and town heritage and a commitment to providing quality, traditional, classic clothing that is both stylish but functional for being outside in all weathers!  My  journey began in the heart of Derbyshire, where I saw a need for clothing that could withstand the rigours of outdoor life whilst also looking good.  I sat at home pondered, produced and created ideas that I not just meet the needs of outdoor enthusiasts, but also those who love quality, hand made/finished products using materials and garments sourced locally and/or within the UK with good ethical standards.  From smart hoodies to stylish accessories, my range has something for everyone. Come and explore my collection and discover the perfect clothing for your outdoor adventures.

The Buck Stone Background

Why did we call it Buck Stone?  The town name Buxton possibly derives from old English for Buck Stone, quite commonly names came from sayings or phrases. The buck upon a rock (buck-stone) suggests the name of Buxton. The buck also has reference to the Dukes of Devonshire, who have greatly aided the development of the Borough, two bucks being the supporters of their heraldic arms.

The Derbyshire Dales and Peak District hold some of the most spectacular views and heritage, and I wanted to portray this in my range of clothing, made for and inspired by the Peak District. Buxton is the heart of the brand. Our town is famous for its Spa Water and its healing properties, as well as it's fine architecture and building history dating back to the 1500's.

The Romans named Buxton Aquae Arnametiae - Waters of the Goddess of the Grove.

Sustainability Promise

Buck Stone prides its self on ensuring all vendors used in the process of all our garments are committed to ethical and moral backgrounds that follow good workplace standards and practices and are committed to the environment.  Tweed fabrics are purchased in Great Britain from companies who hand make them here and where re-useable materials can be sourced, we will always aim to use those products as well.  Embroidery and finishing processes are completed in my studio in Buxton, Derbyshire and are usually made to order or produced in small batches.
